PENÍNSULA VALDÉS, Argentina

This is a mythical spot in Patagonia, a "must" if you come down South. Well known because during our springtime (Sept-Dec) whales will come here to mate, it is also a quite uncommon  reservoire of wild life: foxes, penguins, rabbits armadillos and all kind of seals seem to live in perfect harmony.

Land of pioneers as it's known, Antoine de Saint-Exupéry used to fly a courier plane for some time in Patagonia, if you carefully watch this first picture you will notice the similarity of the island close to the beach to that famous drawing in the first pages of the Little Prince of the serpent swallowing and elephant, the local myth says that the writer was inspired by this view.

Este es un lugar mítico de la Patagonia, un sitio imperdible si vienes por acá.  Es muy conocido por que durante la primavera del sur aquí vienen las ballenas a aparearse.  Es también una singular reserva de vida silvestre donde zorros, pingüinos, liebres y armadillos conviven en armonía.  Tierra de pioneros como se sabe, Antoine de Saint-Exupéry voló como piloto del avión correo por algún tiempo en la Patagonia. Si miran con atención a la primera fotografía, verán el parecido entre la isla cercana a la playa con el famoso dibujo de la serpiente que se traga un elefante en las primeras páginas del Principito. La gente del lugar dice que el escritor se inspiró en esta visión para su dibujo.

Here is where I learned to dive in my teens, surrounded by huge whales, seals and other inhabitants of the seas:  How could I suspect  this would become a touristic attraction, and that now there are barriers to protect the animals from human predation.  This is a place very dear to me, and I have contradictory feelings when I go back, it will no longer be the place of total liberty to dive and sale, but now it is a  place were wild life is preserved and  respected.

Aquí aprendí a bucear en mi adolescencia, rodeada de ballenas, lobos marinos y otros habitantes de los mares: Cómo podría imaginar que tiempo después este lugar se convertiría en una atracción turística donde ahora hay barreras para proteger a los animales de la depredación humana. Este lugar es muy querido para mí y cuando he vuelto a visitarlo tengo sentimiento encontrados, si bien ya no es el sitio de total libertad para bucear y navegar ahora aquí se protege y se aprende a respetar la naturaleza.
